Bulls survive Nets comeback push.

In the only first round series that went to seven games, the fifth seeded Chicago Bulls survive a comeback run by the fourth seeded Brooklyn Nets. Thisafter the Bulls go up 3-1 in the series, they allowed the Nets to come back and force a 7th game on the Nets’ home floor. However, the Bulls sealed the series on the road to advance to the second round.

The Nets had a great first season since they moved from the Garden State of New Jersey to the New York City borough despite going through a coaching change during the middle of the season as Avery Johnson who led the Nets to a great start, faltered afterwards and was fired thus opening the door to PJ Carlesimo to call the shots for the Nets for the rest of the season. Brook Lopez had an All-Star year for the Nets, this despite Deron Williams having a rough season. Also helping the Nets cause are Gerald Wallace, Joe Johnson, Kris Humphries, CJ Watson and Andray Blatche to name some. The Nets took the opening game of the series. They lost the next three, but fought back to even the series and force a 7th game on their home floor. But their comeback bid came up short as their first season in Brooklyn ends in a tough home defeat.
As for the Bulls, they played all season long without their superstar Derrick Rose who was cleared by his doctors to play as early as January after his rehabilitation from the torn ACL he suffered in last year’s playoffs. Despite not having Rose on the floor, the Bulls kept themselves competitive led by All-Stars Luol Deng and Joakim Noah as well as Carlos Boozer. Outside of the frontcourt trio, they have Nate Robinson, Kirk Hinrich, Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson and Marco Belinelli to name some. They survived a comeback bid in this round as they went up 3-1 but lost the next two to set up a seventh and decisive game which they won on the road. It is still unclear if Rose will come to play in the next series, but the Bulls need to push themselves more in order to keep their playoff push alive.
The Bulls will face the defending NBA champions Miami Heat in the second round who are well rested after their sweep of the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round.
As for the Nets, they will look back on this series and the question on whether their head coach PJ Carlesimo will be back full time to call the shots next season, but as they say pro sports in Brooklyn is back.

Nets stay perfect in 2013. The Lakers drama continues. Scott Skiles resigns as Bucks coach.

One team stays perfect in 2013, the drama continues in Tinseltown, and another coach is gone in the middle of the season. Here are the highlights of Week 11 of the 2012-13 NBA season.

Nets stay perfect in 2013.

The start of 2013 has gone well for the Brooklyn Nets, as they have gone 5-0 early into the new year as they have propeled themselves back into contention for a top seed in the Eastern Conference as they currently sit in 4th placetied with the Atlanta Hawksat 21-15 and are. Their current win streak includes a blowout victory against the defending Western Conference Champions Oklahoma City Thunder on the road to open 2013. Interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo has gone 7-1 since taking over the coaching duties for the Nets from Avery Johnson with their lone blemish coming at the hands of San Antonio Spurs on the road. With the ballhandling of all-star guard Deron Williams, together with the scoring of another all-star Joe Johnson, as well as the inside presence of Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries and Reggie Evans who has been a revelation for the Nets this season. The Nets have found success and now are poised to challenge for a top spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Purple and Gold drama continues.

Out West though, one team has yet to pick up a win in the new year, and the surprising fact about it, is that the team who are on the hook are the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers have suffered defeats in the six games they have played so far in 2013losing to tough teams out West like the conference‘s top three of the Thunder, their cotenants in Staples Center theClippers and the Spurs as well as competitive West teams like the Rockets and Nuggets, and a lone East defeat against the 76ers at home. Also, the injury bug has hit the Lakers at the worst possible time as their big men of Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill are currently nursing injuries. Howard and Gasol will be back on the floor soon enough, however Hill will miss the remainder of the season to a hip injury. Despite a valiant effort by Kobe Bryant to keep them afloat the Lakers are sitting in 11th place in the Western Conferenceat 15-21, 5 games off the 8th seed out West which is currently held by the Houston Rockets. Head coach Mike D’Antoni has been disappointing in his performance with the Lakers angering an already restless fanbase as shown in their last game against the Thunder with regular Laker fan actor Jack Nicholson alongside fellow actor Adam Sandlerleaving Staples Center in the fourth quarter. If things don’t change, the Lakers could be well on their way to missing the playoffs for only the sixth time in their illustrious franchise history spanning 16 championships (11 of them won in Los Angeles.) We could be seeing the playoffs with the Clippers advancing and the Lakersheading for an early off-season. How rare are we going to see that moment if it does play out.
Scott Skiles resigns as coach of the Bucks.
Photo ©NBA/Bucks.com
Another coach during the season was shown the door out this week as Scott Skiles filed his resignation as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks after a 16-16 record which saw them fall down in the standings in the Eastern Conference. Skiles is the third coach this season to be relieved during the season. Jim Boylan was named the interim head coach of the Bucks after Skiles’ resignation. The Skiles to Boylan transition is not something new as in 2007, Boylan took over from Skiles (after Pete Myers) with the Chicago Bulls after the team went on a 9-16 startunder Skiles, but Boylan‘s tenure was uneventful as the Bulls missed the playoffs that season. With his resignation, Skiles finishes his tenure in Milwaukee with a 162-182 record spanning his more than four year tenure with the Bucks. Will Boylan be able to turn the Bucks’fortunes around? That we will find out in the coming days.

Meanwhile in Week 10, two players won their second Player of the Week honors this seasonwith James Harden of the Houston Rockets taking the honors in the Western Conference, while Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks wins in the Eastern Conference.

Clipper win streak up to 16, Hawks contending in the East, Avery Johnson relieved of coaching duties in Brooklyn.

On the 150th blog entry of this blog, for the last time for the year 2012, here are the highlights of Week 9 in the NBA.

Clippers win streak now at 16!
Photo ©NBA/Clippers.com
The win streak for the Western Conference leaders the Los Angeles Clippers continuesas it currently stands at 16. In their last win, they had to battle from behind all game long, but they manage to pick up a huge road victory against the Utah Jazz at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City. With this winning streak, we could see Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro coach the Western Conference in the 2013 NBA All Star Game in Houston, unless the Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs have anything to say about it and keep contending for the top spot in the Western Conference. Then again, who knows when the streak will come to an end? But these guys from Tinseltown are playing their best basketball not only this year, but also in franchise history after all the heartbreak and struggles that the franchise had gone through in it’s existence.
Hawks contending in the East.

In the Eastern Conference, the Atlanta Hawks have made a lot of headway this season and have shocked the NBA world as they currently sit in third place in the East and are right on the heels of both the Miami Heat and the New York Knicks. Their star Josh Smith have been putting up all-star numbers for the Hawks and is in serious contention to make his first All-Star Game appearance this season, after being snubbed in previous years. Smith has also been getting a lot of help this season from players like Al Horford, Lou Williams, Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver. Head coach Larry Drew has done a pretty good job in Atlanta, keeping them a competitive team every season, as well as playing well on their first season without last season’s leading scorer in Joe Johnson who moved to the Nets this season. These Hawks are making some noise in the East, and their chances of sneaking to the top of the Eastern Conference are very high.

After 2 1/2 seasons as head coach of the Nets, the curtain has closed for the Little General”, as Avery Johnson was relieved of coaching duties by the Brooklyn Nets organization. His firing came after the Nets have gone 3-10 in December, after they started the season at 11-4 and in the Top 3 of the Eastern Conference and giving him the Coach of the Month Award  for the month of October-November. Johnson finishes his tenure with the Nets with a overall record of 60-116 (.341) which spans 2 1/2 season. Assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo has taken over the coaching reins on a interim basis for the Nets, as the organization searches for a permanent replacement for Johnson. So another coach gets the boot this season, the question now is how will the Nets continue their promising inaugural season in Brooklyn? That we will have to see in the days to come.
Meanwhile in Week 8, LeBron James of the Miami Heat has won his third Eastern Conference Player of the Week award of the season. While Chris Paul becomes the second Los Angeles Clippers player after Blake Griffin and the seventh player to receive the Western Conference Player of the Week award.
Here are the standings across the association after Week 9:
Western Conference:
1. Clippers (24-6), 2. Thunder (23-6), 3. Spurs (24-8), 4. Grizzlies (19-8), 5. Warriors (21-10), 6. Rockets (16-14), 7. Nuggets (17-15), 8. Timberwolves (14-13), 9. Trail Blazers (15-14), 10. Lakers (15-15), 11. Jazz (15-16), 12. Mavericks (12-18), 13. Suns (11-20), 14. Kings (10-19), 15. Hornets (7-23)
Eastern Conference:
1. Heat (20-8), 2. Knicks (21-9), 3. Hawks (19-9), 4. Bucks (16-12), 5. Bulls (16-12), 6. Pacers (17-13), 7. Nets (16-14), 8. Celtics (14-15), 9. 76ers (14-17), 10. Magic (12-18), 11. Raptors (11-20), 12. Pistons (10-22), 13. Bobcats (7-23), 14. Cavaliers (7-25), 15. Wizards (4-24)
Only four teams have less than 10 wins so far with 9 weeks of the season thru, it‘s a five-way race in the Western Conference while its a three-way race in the Eastern Conference on top of the standings.
